Fly Bites

Common housefly is only one of the thousands of species known to man. People might not know that few types of flies bite as opposed to the idea of houseflies being harmless. Pests like black flies, deer flies, stable flies, and horse flies are considered to be a serious nuisance to humans.

As biting flies get older, they feed on rotten vegetables and decayed organisms. Not only that, they need human blood every three to four days to sustain their nutrition. By these routine, biting flies have been now feared to be carriers of infectious diseases.

Complications

Biting flies have sharp mouthpart that can penetrate the skin and eventually cause bleeding. The small open would then be the channel for flies to suck the blood of their host. Similar to the mosquitoes, it is the female fly who feed on human blood to nourish their young.

Disease transmitting biting flies or vectors carries with them harmful pathogens. Diseases like Potomac Horse Fever and Lyme disease. In some places over the world, biting flies can cause serious damage to livestock and people.

Malaria is also a possible disease that can be transfused by biting flies. This disease is caused by certain protozoa which are actively resistant against human body’s defense systems. This explains why symptoms may occur repeatedly if not treated properly.

Over-the-counter ointments can also help ease the discomfort. Look for those containing antihistamine ingredients. For severe itching, calamine lotion relieves the irritation.

Doctors may prescribe an anaphylaxis kit for individuals experiencing disturbing allergic reactions. The kit has an epinephrine injector and an antihistamine which enables the patient to avail himself of the desired treatment.

Prevention

Insect repellants are the primary means of preventing fly bites. A Broad Spectrum Insect Repellant are effective especially on outdoors. The repellant contains R-326 which can protect people from ticks, mosquitoes, and flies.

Permethrin sprays are effective on clothing and tents. This chemical can last up to six weeks and may not be washed away easily by rainwater.

Avoid stacking of idle water. As we all know mosquitoes and flies dwell on standing water. Dispose of decaying vegetation and garbage. These are the kinds of environment where maggots proliferate and where the female flies lay their eggs.
